Autograph request

Sent by Bray to President + (Cigarette card featuring William McKinley) + The White House, Washington on 8th January 1901 requesting his autograph, unfortunately returned unsigned.

The fact that the card bears a Canadian postage stamp is a bit of mystery, possibly Bray had hidden this card inside a newspaper that he sent to a fictitious address in Canada, a technique he had employed successfully a number of times. On the back of a card is a Niagara Falls postmark and a manuscript message "forwarded from Canada" which both lend credence to this theory.

William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1897, until his assassination on September 14, 1901, after leading the nation to victory in the Spanish-American War and raising protective tariffs to promote American industry.
